According to China News Weekly, on June 12, the European Commission announced that it plans to impose temporary countervailing duties ranging from 17.4% to 38.1% on pure electric vehicles imported from China from July this year, on the basis of the current 10% tariff.
After the tariffs, BYD's electric vehicles exported to Europe will pay a tariff of 27.4 percent, Geely's 30 percent and SAIC's 48.1 percent. The EU's tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles will not only affect Chinese car brands, but also affect companies including Tesla, BMW and others that produce electric vehicles in China for export to the EU.

Immediately, SAIC Motor Group, Geely Holding, NIO and other enterprises have issued statements to express disappointment and dissatisfaction with the EU's plan to impose temporary countervailing duties on Chinese electric vehicle companies. Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian stressed at a regular press conference that the investigation is a typical act of protectionism, ignoring objective facts, ignoring WTO rules, going against the historical trend and only harming others and themselves.

China's electric cars cause alarm in Europe and America

high-quality and inexpensive electric vehicles produced in China are welcomed by consumers in more and more countries.
Data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers show that in 2023, China exported 4.91 million vehicles, an increase of 57.9% year-on-year, ranking first in the world for the first time. In recent years, the export of new energy vehicles, especially self-owned brand new energy vehicles, has increased rapidly. In 2020, China exported nearly 70,000 new energy vehicles, accounting for only 7.0% of the total automobile exports, but in 2023, the proportion jumped to 22%.
China has a complete industrial chain supply chain system and a large scale market. Under the open market environment, China's automobile industry has seized the opportunity of green development and accelerated the transformation to new energy vehicles. At present, Chinese cars are at the forefront of electrification and intelligence, and their competitiveness is increasing.
The rapid development of electric vehicles in China has caused alarm in Europe and the United States. On May 14, the United States announced tariffs on a range of Chinese goods, including solar cells, electric cars, computer chips and medical products. Among them, the tariff on electric vehicles has been increased from 25% to 100%, the tariff on power batteries has been increased from 7.5% to 25%, and the tariff on battery parts has been increased from 7.5% to 25%.
